I am pretty sure you know what virus I am referring to.
It is the COVID-19 virus that has led to 187,000 cases and more than 7,000 deaths as of the moment according to worldometers.info.
However, this is not the first time something like this occured. As a matter of fact, if you compare this pandemic to the previous ones the earth has experienced before, you’ll see how small the percentage is according to the list of world’s worst pandemic.
- HIV (2005-2012) 36 million deaths
- Flu (1968)-1 million
- Flu (1918)- 20-50 million
- Black Death (1346-1353) -75-200 million
If it happened before and it is happening now, I am pretty sure that some time in the future something will happen again, maybe even worse than what we have now.
So, how can we be strong and have peace in the middle of a pandemic, crisis, or other uncertainties that may occur in the future?
Well, let’s ask the one who was sleeping soundly in the middle of a storm.
So, what? Am I going to just be still and not do anything? Is that supposed to give me peace?
Well, it depends on your definition of peace.
How the world sees peace
So in summary, majority of people’s idea of peace:
Have we ever attained it and MAINTAINED that peace? These earthly perceptions of peace are not God’s ideas of peace.
That is sweet. God’s definition of peace is completeness in all areas of our lives. Not just in one aspect, but in all and it is not temporary either. For his plan of peace is eternal.
It is totally different from what the world or any person, president, or company may give.
Man, unless renewed from within will always produce the same selfish desires. God’s original plan through Adam was for Adam and his fruits to rule the earth with peace, righteousness, and justice. The way God does it.
Adam failed. God continued to look for a man able to rule in peace while keeping holiness and justice.
He found David. A man after God’s heart. Unfortunately, David sinned, but God promised that through his line, a king will come who will be able to provide peace forevermore. David provided a taste of how it was like, but it was a temporary kingdom.
Earth waited for God’s perfect time. In the middle of oppression, God continued to remind the people of his promise and that he will fulfill it.
The people then, like us now, are so frustrated about our governments, our leaders, but they were promised that one day, a king will come and the government will be upon his shoulders. A king who would provide justice, righteousness, and peace.
God fulfilled his promise. A child is born, but his victory will only be possible if he overcomes sin. That is, if he doesn’t sin. One wrong move, one sin could discredit him from being the ultimate sacrifice. For only a blameless one, a pure one without sin can be the valid sacrifice for all.
Imagine the burden on Jesus’ shoulder. The moment he wakes up, he would pray for strength, for wisdom, for help to overcome every temptation througout that day, because he knew-that one wrong move could destroy the plan of salvation God had laid out for man’s redemption so man could experience life as an overcomer.
When Jesus died on the cross, the enemy thought it was the end. He though he finally ended earth’s hope to have a new and everlasting life. Death was only the beginning, for after 3 days, he rose again. The authority was redeemed by Jesus and he shared it to those who believe in him. He sent the Holy Spirit to help us overcome every temptation set before us even the temptation to be so full of fear and worry even when we know God is there to help us.
Look at Jesus assuring his disciples of peace knowing that the future that is to come for them will be a difficult one because they will be persecuted because of him.
To acknowledge Jesus as Lord is to allow him to govern our lives. To rule over us. So we let our requests be made known to him, not because he doesn’t know it, but for us to be mindful in our requests and prayers. So that when answers come, we give him honor knowing that he was the one who moved in the situation and that it was not just a coincident that things came to be.
Letting our requests made known to him-then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will GUARD our hearts and minds. You see, it is not immediate at times, but the continuous guidance of God as he guards our hearts gives us that peace that he is in control and that he is at work. It also means wisdom is given along with it so that you know what to do or what direction to take as he guides you.
God owns the earth, but authority over it has been given to man.
Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” – Genesis 1:26
That is what Jesus did when he came to earth. He fulfilled that. He stilled the storm, withered an unfruitful tree, healed the sick. He was bringing heaven down here on earth everywhere he went. This is the opposite of what is happening to us. Leaves control us like tobacco, marijuana, etc. Meat controls our lives at times. We feel we can’t live hours without food and we get angry without it. It has controlled us instead of using it to our advantage. Jesus was not controlled by it. He even fasted for many days.
So man ought to pray for things to happen here on earth, as it is in heaven. In heaven there is no sickness, and so we want that to happen to earth. In heaven, there is abundance, so man prays for it to happen on earth because he is the one who has authority over earth.
Practice-and then the God of peace will be with us. Everything we have learned, received, and heard-God wants to see them being done in our lives. If he says “be still”-then peace will come after we trust and become still.
Dear Worried Person,
I hope you are safe and sound during this tough times. The COVID-19 virus has almost paralyzed us all. It has even taken some of our loved one’s lives. It can be so frustrating that we can’t do anything about it at this point, but God’s wisdom is beyond what we can imagine. His thoughts are higher than man’s.
It is so high and so perfect that it has conquered even the very thing that we worry about: death.
I cannot assure you that there will be no death, because death is part of our lives. We may not die because of COVID, but eventually we will die of old age. We will face it one way or another.
BUT Death is not the end.
We can face the days to come knowing that what we have is temporary and is nothing compared to the eternal glory that awaits us.
And so we keep telling this message of hope and peace to people so they too may be able to share in this future. So they won’t have to fear anymore of what can happen to them for they are under God’s promise.
If you are worrying about your family that you might leave behind, know that God will take care of them. He will honor your service, your dedication, and your unending commitment. You have to crush that mentality that God can’t help your family when you are gone.
But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him, and his righteousness to children’s children, to those who keep his covenant and remember to do his commandments.
– Psalm 103:17-18
He promised eternal life to those who believe in him and to those who continue to do his will.
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. – John 17:3
