Today, I read about Ben-hadad, king of Syria who was in battle with the king of Israel, Ahab. The battle was done in the hills and Ben-hadad told his people that the reason why the Israelites won was because their god was a god of the hills. He then told his army to change strategies and to do the battle in the valleys instead, thinking that the Israelites will not win because God is not a god of the valleys.
“And a man of God came near and said to the king of Israel, “Thus says the LORD, ‘Because the Syrians have said, “The LORD is a god of the hills but he is not a god of the valleys,” therefore I will give all this great multitude into your hand, and you shall know that I am the LORD.'” – 1 Kings 20:28
In those days, people worshipped different gods, but these gods had limited power, they are spirits who rebelled against God from the old times and they want to copy God and have people serve them. They have successfully had people follow them, but these gods couldn’t be as great as God, they just keep deceiving people and this is what God wants us to know-that He is a God like no other.
So, when Ben-hadad underestimated God’s power by saying “he is not a god of the valleys”, God gave the Syrians in the hands of Ahab to show that He will win whether he is in the hills or in the valleys, because He is unlike other gods that they worship who is limited. He is Lord of all; the God who is limitless in power and greatness to whom trust should be given.
In the end, Ben-hadad lost and asked for the mercy of the King of Israel and restored to Israel the cities his father took.
Often times, we are like King Ben-hadad. We underestimate what God can do. We try to limit him by saying “maybe I will only be blessed here” or “nothing will happen if I do this.” Our God is not just the god of the hills or of abundance. He can also do miracles in the valleys; in the low points of life, in the seemingly dark times of our lives, in the most unimaginable situation we can be in, God can give us victory.
Lord, we ask for forgiveness
For the times we have underestimated you
For the times we have made you too small
For the times we have believed in lies
That you can never help us, forgive us
Show yourself strong once again
We come to you with open hearts
Come and move in our lives again
Show yourself great
as you display your wonders again and again,
